Hegotá upgrade focuses on two key proposals
The Ethereum Foundation has laid out its priorities for the upcoming Hegotá upgrade, selecting two ‘must ship’ Ethereum Improvement Proposals (EIPs) aimed at enhancing the network’s capabilities. EIP-7805, known as FOCIL, and EIP-8141, or Frame Transactions, are viewed as pivotal to the upgrade by boosting censorship resistance and account flexibility.
EIP-7805: FOCIL enhances transaction inclusion
EIP-7805, or FOCIL, is designed to give users a mechanism to have their transactions included without depending on centralized block builders. This initiative aims to fortify Ethereum’s resistance against transaction censorship. By providing a direct path for eligible transactions, FOCIL intends to ensure a more decentralized and equitable transaction processing environment.
EIP-8141: Frame Transactions support innovation
EIP-8141 will introduce native account abstraction, enabling a more flexible approach to managing accounts on the Ethereum network. This proposal also aims at paving the way for post-quantum authentication methods, an essential consideration in the context of growing computational power that could threaten traditional cryptographic techniques. Additionally, in conjunction with two companion proposals, Frame Transactions may serve as foundational components for future privacy applications on Ethereum.
Impact on Ethereum’s development timeline
The designation of these EIPs as ‘must ship’ indicates that they are crucial to Hegotá’s success, shaping the upgrade’s overall direction. If either proposal encounters delays or challenges, the Ethereum Foundation has stated it will adjust the timeline for Hegotá accordingly, prioritizing these essential elements. Beyond the two highlighted proposals, the Foundation categorised 15 other EIPs as A-tier candidates, expected to ship unless unforeseen development hurdles arise.
Hegotá’s place in Ethereum’s upgrade history
Hegotá comes on the heels of the recently completed Glamsterdam upgrade, which focused on improving scalability and enhancing the base layer of the Ethereum network. In this context, the Foundation is preparing for a broader rollout of Hegotá, hoping to see client teams commence implementation as early as late 2026. The last significant upgrade, Fusaka, launched on December 3, 2025, featuring innovations like PeerDAS that revolutionised data management for Ethereum nodes.
The broader landscape of EIPs and Ethereum’s evolution
A total of 62 EIPs were considered by the Foundation’s Protocol cluster for this upgrade. This effort represents the first time a unified prioritisation of proposals has been published, enhancing transparency in the development process. The implications of these proposals extend beyond immediate network improvements; they point to Ethereum’s ongoing evolution in response to the shifting landscape of user needs and technological advancements.
