Bitcoin sell-side risk declines as profit taking slows
Bitcoin's sell-side risk has dropped significantly, suggesting long-term holders are less inclined to take profits as 1.07 million BTC remains unspent.
Declining sell-side risk indicates changing dynamics
Bitcoin’s sell-side risk has remarkably decreased, now measuring at 7 basis points per day on a seven-day basis according to a report from analytics firm Glassnode. This figure is down from a peak of 16 basis points observed in August, suggesting that potential selling pressure may be easing. As of September 7, long-term holders, who typically retain their investments for extended periods, have significantly slowed down their profit-taking activities.
Long-term holders reduce profit realization
Long-term holders accounted for only 47% of realized profit from Bitcoin sales during this reporting period, a stark contrast to the 88% they represented back in August. This change hints at a shift in market behaviour, where older Bitcoin holders are less active in capturing profits compared to previous months. Despite this decline in profit realization, it is essential to note that this percentage does not reflect the entirety of Bitcoin sales conducted.
Stockpile of Bitcoin remains intact
A distinct feature of the current market is the noteworthy block of approximately 1.07 million Bitcoin that was acquired at prices ranging between CAD 83,000 and CAD 86,000. This large holding is primarily associated with long-term investors, and the report highlights that this stockpile has experienced minimal fluctuations over the past month. Despite this substantial amount, the holdings have yet to be liquidated into the market.
Market pressure from exchange flows
Recent reports indicate a negative trend in exchange spot flow, which measures the balance between selling and buying activity on exchanges. On September 8, cumulative volume delta (CVD) remained negative, illustrating that aggressive selling on exchanges continued to surpass aggressive buying. CVD serves as an important metric for gauging the balance of executed trading and understanding overall market sentiment.
Understanding sell-side metrics
The concept of sell-side risk involves analyzing on-chain profits and losses relative to realized capitalization, giving insight into potential selling pressure in the market. A reduced Sell-Side Risk Ratio does not indicate a direct correspondence with the volume of Bitcoin sold on exchanges. Rather, it underscores a quieter market presence from holders who are less inclined to realize gains.
While the report highlights a reduction in the average profit taken by long-term holders, it also emphasizes that the remaining stock of Bitcoin operates as potential supply in waiting. This could impact future market movements, as any sustained price increase would necessitate a robust buyer response to absorb any forthcoming supply.
Given these shifts in sell-side metrics and the overall landscape of long-term holding behaviours, market participants remain cautious as they navigate through what appears to be an evolving Bitcoin ecosystem.
