Coinbase launches regulated crypto derivatives in Canada

Coinbase expands offerings in Canada

Coinbase has officially launched its regulated crypto derivatives trading in Canada, enhancing access for eligible Canadian traders. The new offerings include perpetual and dated futures tied to major cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin (BTC) and Ether (ETH). This initiative positions Coinbase as the first significant crypto-native platform to provide direct native crypto futures in the Canadian market.

Futures products and eligibility criteria

The launch encompasses a range of 23 crypto-futures products, five commodity futures, along with the Coinbase 50 Index. Traders can leverage their positions with up to 10x, but access is restricted to those meeting specific criteria. Eligible customers must possess a minimum of $5 million in net financial assets or are registered investment advisers and dealers.

Growing interest in crypto derivatives

The decision to introduce these derivatives coincides with a broader trend among U.S. trading platforms expanding their crypto offerings in Canada. Notably, services like Webull, which recently accessed Canadian markets, rely on Coinbase’s infrastructure for trading and custody. This growth reflects a notable surge in interest, with research from the Ontario Securities Commission indicating that crypto ownership in Canada has increased to 25% in 2026 from just 10% in the previous year.

The state of crypto regulation in Canada

This expansion comes amid evolving regulations in Canada, particularly as the government seeks to tighten oversight of the crypto market. In April, Ottawa suggested banning cryptocurrency ATMs due to concerns over scams and money laundering. Furthermore, new legislation has been proposed that would restrict cryptocurrency donations for political purposes.

Competitive landscape in the Canadian market

Coinbase’s entrance into the derivatives space follows the recent activities of various U.S. trading firms entering Canada. Robinhood made its foray into the Canadian market through its $180 million acquisition of WonderFi, which incorporated several local exchanges, including Bitbuy and Coinsquare. The acquisition brought along approximately 300,000 funded customers and regulatory approvals that will bolster its operations.
