Meme coin and tokenized stock pairing on Robinhood Chain

A meme coin known as BONER recently gained prominence by cornering over half of the tokenized shares of Hims & Hers Health on Robinhood Chain. Over the weekend of August 30, BONER secured 53% of these shares, pushing the price of the wrapped stock to $132.64, significantly higher than its actual closing price of $28.84 on the NYSE.

Despite the exciting trading activity, HIMS stock itself did not experience similar volatility, remaining stable around $29 as of the following Monday. This disconnect highlights the speculative nature of meme coin trading paired with traditional equities.

Understanding tokenized stocks and their trading mechanisms

Tokenized stocks are digital representations of actual shares, designed to track their real market prices one-to-one. In this context, when traders purchase a meme coin, the associated stock tokens are locked within the liquidity pool. This mechanism serves as a reserve that determines trading prices.

On Robinhood, trading in tokenized stocks occurs through a permissionless layer-2 blockchain, which gives developers the flexibility to create various trading instruments, including meme coins. As of now, only one licensed partner is responsible for minting or burning these tokenized shares, effectively fixing the supply at approximately four thousand real shares for each tokenized version.

Market implications and trading behaviour

The goal of the recent trading surge was to initiate a short squeeze on Hims & Hers, which has garnered attention as a popular short-selling target. Approximately a quarter of the company’s shares are currently sold short on the NYSE, creating a potential opportunity for aggressive trading strategies.

However, the strategy may not align with the underlying market realities. BONER’s website acknowledges that its capacity to influence HIMS’s short position is limited: the entire pool of tokenized shares represents only 0.1% of the actual short position on the stock. This mathematical discrepancy calls into question the effectiveness of such trading strategies.

Despite the limitations observed in separate cases, trading volume for meme coin and tokenized stock pairings has witnessed substantial growth. On September 2, transactions involving these assets generated a total of $217 million in trading volume on Robinhood Chain. This figure illustrates the escalating interest in cryptocurrency and innovative trading strategies.

As cryptocurrency trading evolves, traders appear increasingly willing to experiment with unconventional strategies. The movement of meme coins combined with tokenized stocks signifies a growing trend that allows for unique engagement with broader financial markets.

Canadian investor considerations in innovative trades

For Canadian investors, understanding these new trading techniques is crucial. With the enforcement of regulations by agencies such as the Canadian Investment Regulatory Organization (CIRO) and the Ontario Securities Commission (OSC), the rise of meme coins and tokenized stocks could present both opportunities and risks.

As trading platforms like Robinhood gain traction in Canada, it is essential that investors remain aware of the regulations governing these trading practices to navigate this evolving landscape effectively.
